History
Toronto EMS was one of many agencies that participated in a campaign to promote a newly unified Toronto municipal bylaw, governing the use of window safety devices in the spring of 2002.
Despite the introduction of that bylaw, 9 children ranging from 18 months to 8 years of age, fell from windows or balconies between February and October. The tragic results included 3 deaths, 2 critical or serious injuries and 4 minor injuries
That prompted Dean Shaddock, Coordinator of the Toronto EMS Community Medicine Program, to begin the development of a safety awareness program. The Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA) invited Toronto EMS to incorporate a small display into the association's annual trade show, Win-door North America 2002.
Since that time, the continued support of the CWDMA and the Win-door North America Show Committee has led to a number of significant achievements focused towards the formation of this unique program - Partners Promoting Window and Balcony Safety.
